Archmarathon 2018: the winners of this record edition

The 5th edition of the ARCHMARATHON Awards has just ended. The event, held in the striking setting of Palazzo Mezzanotte from 11 th to 13 th October 2018, this year broke all records with the presence of 55 architectural and interior design projects divided into 16 categories, presented by 55 studios coming from a good 23 countries and 4 continents. In addition on stage there were 8 international lectures as part of an event that also granted 16 training credits for visiting architects.

The 55 design studios – selected by a prestigious international jury – were invited to present their projects in front of a large audience of architects, developers and designers from all over the world.
The winners of each of the 16 categories in the competition and the two overall winners – one for the Architecture macro category and one for the Interior Design macro-category – announced by the Main Jury chaired by Luca Molinari and including Gary Chang, Lesley Lokko and Rozana Montiel and by the Guest Jury consisting of Massimiliano Cecconi, Cherubino Gambardella and Evgeniya Murinets, are:

OVERALL ARCHITECTURE
MVRDV – Seoullo 7017 Skygarden
Reasons: Projects that work at the micro- and macro-scales are rare. Projects that work at both scales in a context that is little known to architects in the West are rarer still.
MDRDV’s project in Seoul does both: it is visionary, deeply historical and works both through and across disciplinary boundaries in an unprecedented and exemplary way. Its premise is simple: to bring the garden into the urban landscape in ways that make us re- think our relationship with the natural world, questioning leisure, retail, social media and sociability and programme simultaneously. It is an outstanding example of the marriage between research, speculation and practice, a masterful piece of work in every sense of the word.

OVERALL INTERIOR DESIGN
Francisco Pardo Arquitecto + Amezcua – Milan 44

Reasons: One of the real delights in this project was the way in which interiors blend almost seamlessly with planning; finance with aspiration; community with society at large. Equally, the way in which an intimate knowledge of a neighbourhood can provide development models for the world is something that the rest of the world, grappling with conventional understandings of development, gentrification and urban planning, might learn from, a model in the truest sense of the word.
