In the lush landscape of southern China, nestled between the high karst peaks and an inlet of the Li River, a well-preserved sugar mill from the 1960s has been converted by Vector Architects into a large hotel complex. The project is based partly on traditional gardens and is part of the theoretical and methodological research that aims at a contemporary re-reading of Chinese architectural culture, distancing itself from the globalized and westernized approach of the phenomenon of rapid growth of megacities while reestablishing contact with the natural environment.
Man-made paths and artificial pools frame the pre-existing buildings in a central position which becomes the visual, physical and functional heart of the residence, following the planimetric layout of the gardens developed around a nucleus. The new volumes are grafted sideways, preserving their longitudinal and formal development with a double-pitched roof.

In the elongated profiles the original material and colour are represented through curtain walls in perforated concrete, which establish constant visual contact with the outside and a natural supply of ventilation and lighting inside.
The complex frames the opposite bank of the river and opens towards it with a beamed structure that was the walkway for the passage of loads of sugar cane from the river to the laboratories, which have now become an outdoor swimming pool.
