Inaugurated in the summer of 2016, the Barn has just won the 2017 first prize for best wooden architecture. Created by the New York !melk studio, The Barn is intended to act as an urban and economic catalyst for the new mixed-use district in the West Sacramento area in California.
With the backing of the client, Fulcrum Propriety, the project was conceived as a fluid territorial landmark capable of regenerating and sustaining the area that historically housed the logistical docks for loading and unloading rice and which is now earmarked for residential development.

From a parametric design not over-burdened with excessive aesthetic formalism, an architectural structure emerges that can accommodate and actively involve the residents and other citizens through informal spatial settings intended primarily for outdoor use.
The Barn is an example of straightforward architecture able to capture the agricultural identity of Sacramento, currently described as the capital of the US “farm-to fork” phenomenon while at the same time triggering a series of operations that will lead to the construction of new public structures in the suburban area.
